Asian Food Collective is now fiscally sponsored by the Hack Foundation
Our former fiscal sponsor Open Collective Foundation announced their plans for dissolution back in March. After a thoughtful search for a new fiscal sponsor, the Asian Food Collective is excited to be moving forward with the Hack Foundation (d.b.a. Hack Club) as of April 2024.
Below is an FAQ on details of our fiscal sponsorship.
What is a fiscal sponsor?
A fiscal sponsor is a registered nonprofit organization with 501c(3) status. A fiscal sponsor is able to support smaller nonprofits and groups, which allows these smaller groups to also have 501c(3) status.
Why doesn't the Asian Food Collective apply to be a registered nonprofit?
The Asian Food Collective is entirely volunteer-led. Being a registered nonprofit entails a lot of legal and financial oversight and commitment that we do not have the capacity for as volunteers.
Can volunteers be reimbursed for groceries?
Yes! Similarly to when we were under the Open Collective Foundation, volunteers can be reimbursed for Asian Food Collective cooking-related expenses. However, shopping arrangements must be discussed beforehand in our Discord group and it is important to keep all receipts. Purchases without receipts cannot be reimbursed as per our fiscal sponsor.
Are donations tax deductible?
Yes! You can donate through our link and a receipt will be emailed to you.
Are you on Benevity?
Yes! Benevity is an employer donation matching program. Many companies will match donations made by their employees. You can log in to your workplace giving account and search for “Asian Food Collective.” If you have suggestions for other employer donation matching programs, give us an email at hanna@asianfoodcollective.org.
What does my donation contribute to?
Our expenses include renting the kitchen space and general liability insurance on top of shopping for groceries. A monthly contribution also helps us plan our menu and programming.
How can we support the Asian Food Collective?
Volunteer: Volunteer to cook, shop, or write grants. We appreciate any time and skill that you are able to give.
Donate: The Asian Food Collective is volunteer-led and runs entirely on donations and grants. Just $5 provides a neighbor with a hot meal.
